Most of us know Minecraft - the sandbox video game created by Swedish game developer Markus Persson and released by Mojang in 2011. It has been in the top charts for 8 years now - an undying classic. In Minecraft players can build with a variety of different blocks in a 3D procedurally generated world, requiring creativity from players. Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple game modes that change game play are available, including—but not limited to—a survival mode, in which players must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, and a creative mode, where players have unlimited resources to build with. The Java Edition of the game allows players to modify the game with mods to create new game play mechanics, items, textures and assets. There is no specific goals to accomplish, allowing players a large amount of freedom in choosing how to play the game. The game is very lighthearted - you can just walk around and break blocks, then make new things with the blocks you've gathered. And if you've ever wished the real world looked like that too, let me tell, it will soon be possible.

Minecraft Earth is the newest Minecraft mode, planned to be published in 2019. The mode is currently in closed beta and only a few select countries have access to it. It was first announced on 17 May 2019, and will be available as a free to play game on Android and iOS smartphones. Microsoft intend to release the game in a gradual roll out, similar to Fortnite's mobile version. That will prevent unexpected crashes, big queues in the game and similar unpleasant experiences.
Similar to the original, Minecraft Earth will also be centered around destroying and building structures, gathering resources, crafting, exploration and combat. The big difference is, you do it all in the real world. Similar to Pokemon Go, players could build augmented reality structures in collaboration with other players, gather resources through tapping on "tappables" in the in-game map, and access "Adventures" which may be a puzzle or a specific task, or a virtual location with hostile entities to defeat. The adventures reward players with in-game currency. Collaborative construction is done on "build plates", and players can share copies of their completed structures. Minecraft Earth takes into account physical objects such as trees and lakes so there are fewer incidents and interference with the AR simulation.
